Struggling international students face unfair work and rental exploits

Struggling international students face unfair work and rental exploits

I identified that international students in the UK frequently face unfair practices like deposit disputes, contract absences, cash payments, extended shifts, and exploitation due to vulnerabilities such as limited legal knowledge, language barriers, cultural reluctance to seek help, preference for informal networks over professional services, and systemic issues like underfunded legal aid, often leaving them overwhelmed and hesitant to pursue resolutions.

Educational video Game prototype to build legal confidence for students.

Educational video Game prototype to build legal confidence for students.

I proposed a Pokémon-inspired video game built in RPG Maker XP, where players as international students collect legal resources and support systems (like clinics and friends) as creatures to battle bosses representing exploitative landlords and managers, using turn-based combat and storytelling to teach rights and strategies engagingly, encouraging a shift from informal reliance to professional help-seeking, with scope for expansions like partnerships and open-source development.

Human-centered design journey using double diamond framework.

Human-centered design journey using double diamond framework.

I followed the Double Diamond process: discovering issues through primary surveys & interviews with graduates and professionals plus secondary analysis of reports and policies; defining via evolving "How Might We" questions, personas, empathy maps, and flowcharts; developing with ideation sprints, prototypes like flashcards and trading cards, and iterative testing; delivering a functional game artifact with reflections on challenges and future scalability via SWOT analysis and UN goal alignments.
