tinder and mental health
As part of a university project, I dived deep into how Tinder’s UI/UX design affects our interactions with modern romance.
Along with extensive research on its vast psychological impacts, I created a quick visual proposal showcasing the potential for Tinder to become a healthier online platform.
From my research, I found several significant risks associated with excessive usage, such as decision fatigue, low self-esteem, depression and addiction. These risks often stem from patterns of behaviour that users find difficult to stray away from, especially when Tinder is designed for peak user retention.
In response, I wanted to create a design concept that focused on exposing these risks more openly, aiming to bring awareness to these dangers through my design approach. I was inspired by the transparency of cigarette packaging and how it highlights the dangers of smoking.
I mirrored Tinder’s original design in appearance and incorporated warnings and messages that directly address the potential consequences of prolonged use. I introduced banners and pop-ups to bring subtle, hidden dangers to light in order to ensure users are aware of what they are getting themselves into.
Lastly, I created a mental health support page concept on Tinder’s platform, providing even more information on how users can take care of themselves than what is already available on the app.
The gamification of basic psychological needs of love and affection can lead to negative consequences that need to be addressed, my research and design is a call to recognise and address these issues, proving it is possible to create a platform that allows people to explore their interests whilst being responsible.
